As part of the five-month program, participants work on Action Plans designed to improve or enhance some aspect of local community life. These Action Plans are intended to provide the framework to allow for real-world changes in the community. Through interviews, surveys, and research, the teams develop a program rationale, a set of measurable objectives, a needs assessment, a proposed budget, a timeline, suggestions for community collaborations, and a promotional packet. The final projects are presented on the last day of the program as part of the graduation ceremony. The action plans are modeled on the master’s projects that Sierra Nevada College students produce as part of the M.Ed. in Leadership program. Producing an action plan prepares a team to implement a good idea, in a short period of time, with a realistic budget, through the cooperation and support of the local community. These action plans are a roadmap to effective change.
